2nd Conference of Cities for Road Safety

This event was held in Córdoba (Spain) in February 2011 under the auspices of the Spanish Directorate General for Traffic, the Catalan and Basque government agencies in charge of traffic regulation, as well as the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.

Pontevedra had already taken part in the 1st Conference in Gijón, where city representatives delivered a plenary talk about alternative town planning and traffic flow management models, which explains the invitation to the second edition of this national gathering, this time in Andalusia.

To the surprise of both delegates and representatives, the organizers presented Pontevedra with an award in recognition of its sustainable mobility model and dramatic reduction in road violence. In addition, the city’s traffic calming measures were highlighted as the best practice in matters of road safety.

Verdict of the jury

The attribution of the prize was published on page 33 of the proceedings of the 2011 Seguridad Vial Award, together with a press release prepared by the organizers of the 2nd Conference of Cities for Road Safety: “The jury based their decision on the efforts the city of Pontevedra has made to implement a more sustainable urban mobility model in which different social sectors and local administration departments are invited to contribute. Among its many achievements, this model has managed to create an urban environment where pedestrians are given maximum priority, road accident figures have become almost negligible and all citizens can now move around safely and healthily”.
